Home health agencies will be transitioning to a new OASIS data set, the OASIS-E, in January 2023. The IMPACT Act established in 2014 was designed to standardize post-acute care reporting data among various providers. SPADEs–Standardized Patient Assessment Data Elements—was a result of the IMPACT Act. CMS’ goal is to regulate quality measures across the post-acute spectrum with the intention of improved quality patient care and communication between providers. The new data set draft for home health is set to incorporate 27 new items with a change in the numbering as well as placement of items in sections. This assessment addresses issues which frequently trigger adverse patient events such as medication reconciliation at transfer and/or discharge, health literacy, in-depth cognitive issues, and the specific effects of pain. To maximize accuracy and reimbursement, clinicians who perform OASIS and/or its quality review need education on the changes as well as the applicable CMS guidance for completion. Expect a final version to be released very soon. However, organizations should not delay education—January will be here in the blink of an eye.
