October 1st marked the beginning of the hospice fiscal year and implementation date of some changes detailed in CMS’ Hospice Final Rule.  One particular modification has to do with the Hospice Election Statement Addendum.  Hospices are now required to include a “date furnished” on the addendum and this date must also be recorded in the clinical record.  “Date furnished” will show  the hospice was compliant to the required timeframes of providing the addendum when requested—particularly when the patient or representative does not sign the addendum on the day the hospice issued it.  Regarding timeframes, CMS also tweaked that rule.  If the patient or representative requests the addendum within the first five days of hospice election, the hospice has five days to furnish the document.  Previously, hospices had to supply the addendum within three days if the request was made after the day of election.  This change allows for completion of the hospice plan of care and improved accuracy of information being supplied to the patient.
